In our garden/outdoor science lab, we have host plants to several different butterfly species. The students find butterfly eggs and caterpillars on the rue or pipevine plants.  We took a mature caterpillar to the classroom to observe it's growth and pending pupation.  After observing the butterfly emerge from the chrysalis, we took the young adult insect to the garden when its wings had dried.  The butterfly was released in our garden.
