Whole Foods Market Nutrition Class: Healthy Smooth

By:

Our 3rd Whole Foods Nutrition Class was on December 9th. Students learned how to make a healthy smoothie. Students helped to select the fruits that would be used to make the smoothie. They could select strawberries, mango and/or bananas. After selecting their fruits, they added them to the blender.

Then Lacey Baxter told the students that they could add vegetables to their smoothies. This could be a good way to eat those vegetables they may not like, but cannot really taste when it is mixed in a smoothie. We picked kale from our garden that morning, so we told the kids we would add kale. This didn't sound too appetizing for some students. We gave them a small piece of fresh kale for tasting. Then we talked about how they could make kale chips at home or buy them at the store as an alternative to potato chips or other chips. They are much healthier for them. Lacey brought bags of flavored kale for tasting.

Many students liked the fresh kale and the kale chips. Not bad!

So they gave thumbs up toadding the kale. After adding the kale and blending it all together, then students could choose orange juice, apple juice or almond milk to add to their blend,

Students enjoyed the smoothie and were surprised that they could not taste the kale.

They were ready for MORE!

The Kindergarten-2nd grade students then listened to the story about a goat that really had a good diet for a human, but not for a goat.
