Whole Foods Nutrition Class: Eat Local
By:
Our second Whole Foods Nutrition and Cooking Demonstration class was held on Tuesday, November 11th. K-5th grade students learned that fruits and vegetables that are purchased from local farmers' markets are fresher and full of vitamins and minerals because they were recently picked. Even better would be picking fruits and vegetables from our very own garden right before we need them.
They learned that eating processed foods deprives them of vitamins that they would get from a healthier, fresher choice. So students were given the opportunity to make a healthy pita pizza instead of eating a processed pizza from a box.
They were given a small whole wheat pita with marinara sauce and a little bit of "real cheese".
They could then add any fresh vegetables they would like to add to their pizza.
They could add mushrooms, red, orange and yellow sweet bell peppers, carrots, broccoli, basil and tomatoes. The tomatoes and basil were harvested from our garden that morning.
Students chowed down and found that they really liked the fresh pizza.
Plates were actually cleared and students were surprised that they liked the pizza. They
now have an easy snack or lunch that they can prepare at home, and it is GOOD for them!
The K-2nd grade students listened to the story of How a Seed Grows.
Our partnership with Whole Foods helps to enrich, extend and review what our students are learning in their Garden/Nutrition class.
