Keep Our Campus Litter Free

We have a nice playground area and soccer fields that are used after school and weekends. Unfortunately, we do not have adequate trash cans around our campus for our visitors to use. Two trash cans that we had on our playground fell into disrepair and were discarded, but never replaced. So, we started using 2 moveable trash cans that were sometimes blown over and litter was strewn across our campus. Not a pretty sight!. Our students had to work very hard to keep our campus litter free.

We set up a system to collect litter last year called "Trash Brigade".  This activity is explained in our 2013-2014 Eco-Campus activities. Basically, every class, PreK-5th, has a reusable tote bag that two students carry with them whenever they go outside. The two students are on Trash Brigade for the week, and they are responsible for picking up any litter they see as they walk around our campus. They know they shouldn't pick up glass or anything "icky". 

    

 

 

This year, to help them in their endeavors, we requested from our district 6 new permanent trash cans because the ones we had were in bad shape and had fallen into disrepair and were thrown away.

The old trash cans were not replaced so we contacted our Grounds Department and requested 6 permanent trash cans. YAY! We received them in October and they are already being put to good use! Less litter on our campus. HOORAY!

Having these new trash cans has made a huge difference. Everyone has a place to put trash now, and we have less litter to pick up!
