James Williams Elementary Murals
By:
James Williams Elementary School was bustling with activity weeks before the first day of the
2012-2013 academic year. Teachers, parents, and students were installing and painting murals in the school's main hallway.
The Williams PTA decided to replace some of its bulletin boards with permanent murals. In years past, the traditional bulletin boards were repapered several times throughout the year.
By swapping them with painted murals, Williams Elementary has significantly reduced the amount of wasted paper. In addition, the permanent murals have saved money and volunteer time.
Our own art teacher, Mary Kirk, sketched the designs for the murals, ensuring the artwork was flexible enough to permit updates throughout the year. For example, one of the murals is a calendar that provides information on upcoming events, while another mural provides a place for students to display their artwork. These plans were approved by the district and school administration. Approximately twelve volunteers including parents, students, and alumni used the 'paint by number' method to fill in the outline drawn by Mrs. Kirk. It was truly a community effort!
