Needs more advertisement

By:

This idea was first presented at a faculty meeting, but very quickly. Many teachers were not really into the idea, and the majority of our students eat off campus, which is mostly fast food. On the positive side, it is difficult to get junk food at school (no vending machines with candy or soda), but the district could have helped advertise the project better - it took us awhile to find the article about the program (see below).

FWISD ALREADY “MOVING” ON CHILDHOOD HEALTH

First Lady Michelle Obama's visit to north Texas this week is the perfect time to update the efforts of the Fort Worth ISD in its effort to combat childhood obesity. Mrs. Obama's campaign is called The Let's Move campaign and focuses on what families, communities and the public and private sectors can do to help fight childhood obesity. The Fort Worth ISD Health and Physical Education applauds the national effort to combat this growing issue.

“With FWISD’s development of a coordinated health program we know that the very best way to serve the health needs of our students is for us to work together,” said Georgi Roberts, director of Health and Physical Education.  "This includes our ongoing collaboration with nutrition services, health services, social services, and the development of a strong standards- based health and physical education curriculum based on our national and state standards.”

Since the campaign was first begin the Fort Worth ISD has expanded the Local Wellness Coordinator Program to all schools with this year’s wellness initiative being  “Junk” the Junk Food.  The intent is to educate both students and parents that they can make better choices when snacking.  The bonus has been an increased awareness of food choices by our teachers as well.

Additionally, FWISD has installed fitness trails at 6 of elementary schools.  One teacher claims the trails have motivated many more of her students and their parents to participate in the school running club.

FWISD Child Nutrition Services is piloting a breakfast program to insure that all students have a healthy breakfast.  The District continues to look at ways to insure that our students get both structured and unstructured activity time.

“Urban school districts are often strapped for funding, time and space for our students but with our goal of healthy students and community, I think we are primed to support Michelle Obama’s initiative,” said Ms. Roberts.

“We know that the research supports the simple fact that students who are healthy and active learn better.”
